Anchorman

Tonight we watched Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. If you’ve ever seen a Will Ferrell movie then you’d have a good idea of what to expect from this one, and I certainly wasn’t disappointed in that respect.

It was an incredibly stupid movie, and yet, somehow I couldn’t stop laughing through most of it. I don’t know if I could stand to watch it again, but it fits the bill for exactly what it is supposed to be.

Christinia Applegate looks better now at ~36/37 than she ever has before.

Iron Man

Tonight we saw Iron Man with friends. My self-imposed media blackout meant I had no idea what the movie was. In fact, until a week or so before it came out I hadn’t even heard of it! I’ve found this makes for a much better movie…

This was a fun film. There’s not a whole lot to say about it given how current it is, but overall I really enjoyed it. The suspension of disbelief was alive through most of the film including the over the top features of the suit, but it did fall through a bit when the main character was working with his computers. As usual it was so fantastic that it just doesn’t seem plausible, even in the foreseeable future. But luckily this didn’t detract from the film at all since the visuals were so well done.

Someone needs to let Gwyneth know that’s it’s okay to eat a cheeseburger now and then a gain a few pounds. She could weigh 20 pounds more than she does now and still look fantastic in that role… probably even more than that.

Overall, I’d give it a 4 out of 5.

Blackwood Farm

Tonight I finished reading Blackwood Farm by Anne Rice. It is another book in The Vampire Chronicles and marks my return to her work after a very long hiatius. After her horrible book Violin, I effectively swore off her works for over a decade. I was reluctant to return but at the same time I always enjoyed The Vampire Chronicles enough that I finally gave in.

And, I’m glad I did. The story contained within was a good one. It wasn’t her best writing by any means, but the storytelling itself was wonderful.

This book is all about a young vampire that tells the story of himself, his family, and his twin brother’s ghost to the infamous vampire Lestat.

I’d give it 3 stars out of 5.

Sugar Land Criterium

Today was the Sugar Land Criterium bicycle races in Sugar Land Town Square. This event was hosted by Sugar Cycles, a bike store local to the Sugar Land area.

The course was a 1 mile loop through the town square itself. It was a very technical course, but luckily I don’t believe there were any crashes during the entire day.

We watched the men’s category 4/5, men’s category 3/4, women’s and junior’s open, and then the men’s pro / 1 / 2 / 3 races. The final event was the most amazing to watch as the skill levels within that group were amazing similar and the pack kept closely together throughout most of the race. In the other races there were large separations between groups as the skill differences in riders were so vast.

It was a great event, and the folks at Sugar Cycles did a great job in organizing it.

Lori took some pictures of the event, and they can be found at http://www.pbase.com/skinnyorangecat/may_2008

Holes

On Saturday we watched the movie Holes. A surprisingly good film from Disney, Holes is about a teenage boy who is wrongly accused of a crime and is sent to a juvenile work camp instead of prison. The camp is run by some shady characters and then the plot explores from there.

The best part of the film was the part played by Sigourney Weaver. She played a believable Texas country girl with a bad side. If I had run into this character one day in Dalhart I wouldn’t haven’t thought twice about it.

I’d give it a 3.5 stars out of 5.
